Close Encounters

Running away from a wild animal will often trigger a prey-chase response, just like in dogs or cats. If you come across a large animal like a coyote, stand your ground and show the animal that you are big and scary. If the animal is approaching or unintimidated, raise and wave your arms, and yell or shout at the animal. Make noise by banging rocks together or pots and pans, or throw objects like sticks or rocks near (never at) to scare it away. Never turn your back on a wild animal until you can place a safe distance between you.
